Design Factors To Consider When Building A Pool On A Slope

The fact that your yard is sloped does not mean you have to wipe away your dreams of a swimming pool installation. While you might have to take some different measures in your design, building an in-ground pool on a hill is possible. Learn about some design factors to consider to help you prepare for this exciting build.

Choosing the Ideal Location

If there are any drawbacks to building a pool on a slope, it is that you might not be able to install the pool in the exact location you want. During the design phase, the builder will inspect the yard's condition to assess drainage options.

Rain is inevitable, so it is important that when it rains, the muddy water does not flow into the pool. The builder will determine the safest place to install the pool based on drainage. The threat of a slope is that, depending on the depth of the hill, rain and other debris can easily flow into the pool. The builder will help you choose a location with less risk of this issue.

Installing a Retaining Wall

Adding a retaining wall is another essential feature you can expect to include in your sloped property pool design. A retaining wall works alongside the positioning of the pool. Choosing the right location helps minimize the risk of debris flowing into your pool. In contrast, a retaining wall serves as a physical barrier to further help prevent the runoff of any debris into the pool.

This addition is especially important if the pool is located at the yard's lowest point. Retaining walls can be designed in the same stone as you use on your pool and with landscaping features to make them more attractive.

Adding Unique Pool Features

Constructing a pool on a slope also leaves the door open for some unique pool features, such as a lounge area. On the side of the pool nearest the slope, you could have a runoff built that allows the water to flow into a small pool surrounded by concrete. You can then place chairs on the concrete area to create a lounge space.

Another option is to construct a pool with an infinity ledge. Again, on the side nearest the slope, an infinity edge would give the illusion that the water flows endlessly.

In addition to the concepts mentioned above, your pool contractor will review property-specific details. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask your swimming pool installation contractor to ensure you are well informed about the build process.
